Before I write about what I’m going to write about, let me first report that LONDON WAS THE GREATEST THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED TO ME. Okay, maybe that was a little over dramatic, but seriously, I fell in love with London. Dare I say I love it more than Paris? Yes, I think I do. I am planning on blogging about our trip next week, so please stay tuned. Thank you for all your great ideas, they were so helpful.

One reason why I’m not blogging about our Europe vacation today is because I left work 45 minutes later than I planned and it took me 85 minutes to get home from work. My 12-mile commute usually takes me 50 minutes, plus another 10 minutes to walk from where I park my car at the local pool to my office. (Who wants to pay $100 a month to park at work? Not this girl, especially when she works 2 days from home each week).

Due to all this time I spend in my car, I decided earlier last year that I needed to up my productivity in the car. So instead of only listening to hot 99.5, I started listening to other things. Here are some of my favorite things to listen to during my longish commute:

  • General Conference talks. I can’t get enough.
  • Book of Mormon (in Spanish). I didn’t realize until recently that there was a play button to allow me to listen to the scriptures. And I started listening to them in Spanish because I need to keep up my skills.
  • Stuff You Missed in History Class podcast. This podcast is one of my favorites. Well, it was, and then the 2 hosts up and left and I don’t particularly like the new girl so I haven’t listened in awhile. But it’s cool because they teach you about something that happened in history in a very engaging way.
  • This American Life podcast. I’m a fan of Ira Glass and the subjects he picks for his stories. I have to say, I do not like Radiolab, which I find kind of similar to TAL, but I’m a fan of this podcast.
  • Pandora stations. Some of my favorite include Michael Buble, Today’s Country Hits, Yo-Yo Ma, Young & Rollins, Joshua Bell, and Madeleine Peyroux.
  • Phone calls to family and friends. I once saw a challenge where you were supposed to talk to 1 family member or friend every day and while I don’t do this every week, let alone every day, I think about it a lot and then call someone I haven’t talked to in awhile, just to say hi and catch up. You aren’t allowed to use your cell phone while driving in Maryland or DC so this is a little more tricky.

What are your favorite things to listen to for extended periods of time in the car or on the metro? I haven’t had the greatest success with books on tape because sometimes the reader’s voice annoys me. Any good ones out there? Any good podcasts I need to check out? I really really really dislike traffic so any and all suggestions of good distractions are welcome.

If only I could eat brownie batter while being stuck in traffic. Which chocoholic am I?
